Chapter 8

Three days later, Kelsie knew that she’d reached the end of Joe’s patience. She’d avoided him for the past three evenings, but the text message she’d just received from him stated very firmly that, if she wasn’t waiting for him to pick her up at six o’clock that night, he would find her.

She didn’t doubt his threat and groaned with worry. Joe was a good guy. She definitely didn’t deserve him, but he didn’t deserve her non-explanation for her avoidance of him either. If the roles were reversed, she would be hurt and angry after a night of passionate sex and then no communication at all.

She’d been staying away from him, telling herself that she didn’t deserve him. But he didn’t deserve the way she’d been treating him either. Kelsie’s conscience was bothering her. [CS13]

Unfortunately, her body warned her that keeping her distance from Joe was the only solution. She wanted him. Her body craved another night in his arms.

No way would she give in to that need though. As much as her conscience bothered her about how she was treating Joe now, she knew that it would be so much worse if Tommy showed up and found out she was emotionally interested in a man. Tommy would…Kelsie shuddered to think about what might happen.

She had to give back. She’d messed up. She had to balance out the rights and wrongs.

But she also needed to fix this…thing…whatever she had…with Joe.

So instead of driving back to her apartment after school, she turned out of the school parking lot and headed towards Joe’s house. She knew where it was even though she’d never actually been there. Everyone knew where Joe’s house was. Apparently, some renowned architect designed it and the result had made the covers of several important magazines.

She didn’t care about that. All she cared about was getting Joe to stop his assertion that they were going to have a relationship. Under no circumstances could that happen!

Pulling up to his house, she stared at the glass and wood structure. From a distance, one might think it was just a simple log cabin type of residence. But upon closer inspection, it was a piece of art. The wood and stone structure contained large windows that allowed the sunshine to highlight the interior of the house. Entire walls were made up of those windows with thick, rough pine columns supporting the roof and a wide porch that surrounded the entire structure.

She could imagine Joe and his future family sitting on the porch, rocking in the chairs as they watched the sun set on the fields beyond the house, the horses frolicking in those fields while his children ran around in the grass.

It was a painful image and she shook her head, forcing her feet to carry her towards the house.

It was still early so she suspected that Joe wasn’t back from working in one of the fields or ranges or whatever they were called. She really should get up to speed on the lingo around here.
